I have the desire to effectively connect people to people. People that are in need with people that are in excess. If you are reading this (or typing it), then you are in excess.
I talked many years ago with some friends about how this would work. (McGarvey, do you remember?) I never was able to completely wrap my mind around it. So the idea lay dormant for a bit.
We discussed it briefly with our community. I was then challenged by a very good friend just to do it. Start with one person in need, and see where it goes.
So here's where it's gone so far: I contacted Julie because of her ad on Craig's List. Take a second to click the link, so you can understand how urgent the need is. I'll add that the newborn had complications in the womb and lost one of his feet, and that the family is living near 7th ave. and Baseline.
We exchanged phone calls and emails regarding Priscilla and her situation for a few days. It took a while to sort out the actual needs, get a hold of Priscilla, etc. In order to verify there was a real need, and to gain her trust that there was real help available, Justin and I went down to meet with Julie where she works.
So Justin, in his wiseness, suggests this program for Priscilla, because her housing situation is dire. She's about to get evicted (for the nth time), has no where to go, etc. So I've sent the application to Julie, who is going over tomorrow to help Priscilla fill it out. She will get the info back to me and I'll drive the application over. There's a $15 application fee, and a $200 deposit due at time of move in.
I could pay for her to apply to this program myself, but honestly, I want to see who will step up with me. The more people that help, the easier it will be to help someone else. And trust me, there's no shortage of desperate ad's on Craig's List alone, and I'm sure many more that could use some uncovering. Many of them are single mothers - the reason of course being another topic for another blog entry.
I believe we can change the worlds' mind about why the church exists. I really do.

Good stuff Jake. You know that we're in...
Sounds great, we are completely interested in helping with this project as well as the future ones to come. I will look at some of my nonprofit stuff to find more resources as well! There should be an org that provides childcare either free, on a sliding scale, or at a set low cost so that single parents in similar situations have the resources they need to work. Or something. Anyway, sounds awesome!
great stuff Jakey. I'm in for sure. You have a big heart, the size of your head.
